Trump declares English as the sole official language of the US
President Donald Trump has officially designated English as the sole official language of the United States through an executive order, a historic move as the nation has never had such a declaration at the federal level, according to the White House.

Signed on March 1, 2025, the executive order stresses the importance of a common language in fostering unity and enhancing civic engagement. It also revokes a previous mandate from President Bill Clinton implemented in 2000, which required federal agencies and organizations receiving government funds to offer language assistance to those with limited English proficiency.

“Establishing English as the official language will not only streamline communication but also reinforce shared national values and create a more cohesive and efficient society,” the order states, emphasizing that it is “in America’s best interest for the federal government to designate one — and only one — official language.”

"A nationally designated language is at the core of a unified and cohesive society, and the United States is strengthened by a citizenry that can freely exchange ideas in one shared language," the White House highlighted on March 2, 2025.

With this new executive order, agency heads have the authority to decide whether to continue offering services in languages beyond English, taking into account their specific missions and the effective provision of government services.

Despite the absence of an official language at the federal level until now, over 30 states have already adopted English as their official language. According to U.S. census data, more than 350 languages are spoken across the country; however, approximately 78% of residents communicate solely in English at home. Following English, the most commonly spoken language is Spanish, succeeded by Chinese. Other languages represented to a lesser extent include Tagalog, Vietnamese, Arabic, French, and Korean, with more than a million speakers of Russian.
