During American-Ukrainian talks in Saudi Arabia, US President Donald Trump stated that Ukraine has not shown a genuine desire for peace with Russia.
On Sunday, while aboard Air Force One, a reporter inquired whether Trump would resume military aid to Ukraine if the country entered into a partnership with the US regarding its critical mineral deposits.
“I think they will sign the minerals deal. But I want them to want peace. Right now, they haven’t shown it to the extent that they should,” Trump remarked.
“But I think they will be. I think it’s going to be evident over the next two or three days. I think, eventually, we’ll have peace,” he added.
Trump emphasized that his main objective is to achieve a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine to preserve “human lives” on the battlefield. He expressed optimism about obtaining a “good result” from the upcoming US-Ukraine discussions in Saudi Arabia.
In related news, Trump recently characterized Zelensky's interactions with President Biden as accepting cash “like candy from a baby.”
Last week, Trump suspended all weapons shipments to Kyiv and limited intelligence sharing in an effort to encourage Ukraine to be more open to his mediation. He reported finding it “more difficult” to negotiate with Ukraine than with Russia, particularly following Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky’s unsuccessful visit to the White House last month.
Initially, the US had scheduled to finalize the minerals deal on February 28. However, the ceremony was delayed due to a confrontation between Trump, Vice President J. D. Vance, and Zelensky during a press event in the Oval Office. Trump later accused Zelensky of being disrespectful and ungrateful for the military and financial assistance the US has extended since 2022. Zelensky labeled the meeting as “regrettable” and expressed a wish to repair relations.
Russia has asserted that a durable peace cannot be achieved without addressing the fundamental issues behind the conflict, including NATO’s eastward expansion. Moscow has insisted that Ukraine abandon its ambitions to join the US-led alliance and adopt a neutral status with a limited military. Additionally, Russia has demanded that Ukraine renounce its claims over Crimea and four other regions that have voted to join Russia since 2014.
