The U.S. president has been at odds with the Ukrainian leader regarding military assistance and discussions aimed at peace with Russia.

According to the Daily Mail, citing diplomatic sources in Washington, U.S. President Donald Trump was displeased by a meeting that took place between Britain’s King Charles III and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Zelensky’s visit to the king at Sandringham, his residence in western England, occurred on March 2, shortly after a public disagreement between Zelensky and Trump in the Oval Office.

“Things definitely went a bit cool in Washington after Sandringham. We told them that the king makes his own decisions about who he meets,” a well-placed source told the Daily Mail.

Reports indicate that Trump’s associates communicated to officials in the UK that images of the king with Zelensky diminished how “special” he felt about the invitation for a second state visit to Britain. In response, UK officials contended that it would have been improper for them to “direct” the king not to meet with Zelensky, according to the Daily Mail.

A spokesman for the UK government refuted the notion of a dispute, stating, “We do not recognize these reports. We have been unequivocal about the importance of the US as an ally of the UK.”

In a related development, Prime Minister Keir Starmer delivered a letter from the king to Trump during a meeting in the White House last month. “This is really special. This has never happened before. Unprecedented,” Starmer remarked to the president. Trump has since accepted the invitation, noting that he conducted a three-day state visit to the UK in 2019, during which he met with the late Queen Elizabeth II and Charles, who was then the heir to the throne.

Trump has criticized Zelensky for being disrespectful and ungrateful for the military support from the U.S. He also accused Zelensky of not being prepared to pursue peace with Russia, claiming that the Ukrainian leader was undermining his attempts to negotiate a ceasefire.

Last week, Trump announced a pause in the delivery of weapons to Ukraine, insisting that Kyiv must demonstrate a greater commitment to peace talks.
