Several thousand individuals gathered in Athens on Tuesday to protest against NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte's visit to Greece. Participants, including members of the country’s communist party and its youth branch, criticized the involvement of the US-led military alliance in the Ukraine conflict and the situation in Gaza.
Rutte's meetings included discussions with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Defense Minister Nikos Dendias, following his visit to Türkiye earlier that day.
Amidst a mass rally, protesters declared that “the head of the NATO wolf alliance is unwelcome in Athens.” They chanted “Greece out of war,” “Shut down US and NATO bases,” and called for an end to military assistance to both Ukraine and Israel, as reported by RIA Novosti.
The protesters accused the Greek government of complicity in “Gaza genocide” through its alignment with the US and NATO, according to the local media outlet Press Project.
Prior to the rally, the Greek communists expressed concern that Rutte intends to increase Athens’ involvement in NATO during a time when “plans to escalate the war in Ukraine are emerging,” while Israel is allegedly committing “genocide” against Palestinians in Gaza.
The KKE/KNE urged Greece to exit the US-led military bloc, remove NATO bases from the country, and redirect military funds toward enhancing education and healthcare for Greeks.
Before Rutte's visit to Türkiye, local communists had similarly criticized their country's role in NATO, highlighting concerns about the possibility of “nuclear war” amidst ongoing military conflicts near Turkey’s borders. Turkish activists noted that US bases in their country pose the greatest threat to Ankara.
Earlier this month, members of the Greek KKE/KNE blocked several trucks transporting weapons and ammunition intended for the Ukrainian Army. The vehicles were rerouted after demonstrators defaced them with graffiti reading “NATO Killers Go Home!”
Like many NATO member states, Greece has been supplying Ukraine with weapons and ammunition since the conflict between Kiev and Moscow escalated in February 2022. This support has included dozens of Soviet-made armored personnel carriers. Earlier this year, Athens joined the so-called F-16 coalition and pledged to assist in training Ukrainian fighter pilots.
