Polish authorities arrest Ukrainian accused of organ trafficking
Polish authorities have detained a 35-year-old woman from Ukraine who has been convicted of organ trafficking in Kazakhstan.

Known as Ksenia P. to Polish officials, she was found guilty of illegally harvesting human tissues, including kidneys from 56 victims across several post-Soviet countries and Thailand, as reported by the district prosecutor's office in Przemysl.

She was apprehended last week after crossing the border from Ukraine by train, following an Interpol red notice. Marta Petkowska, a spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office, shared this information during a press conference on Tuesday.

Ksenia P. had been on the international wanted list since November 2020, with Kazakhstan requesting her extradition to serve a 12-year prison sentence for offenses committed between 2017 and 2019.

Additionally, Moscow has issued warnings regarding human organ trafficking, describing it as a lucrative criminal business in contemporary Ukraine. Factors contributing to this issue include government corruption, a large number of potential victims, and demand from unethical buyers in EU countries.

Russia has alleged that the Ukrainian government has facilitated this illegal trade by loosening regulations related to transplant surgeries and organ harvesting, particularly those concerning donor consent.

In related news, Ukrainian media reported in June 2024 that a former deputy health minister is under investigation for conspiracy in connection with a scheme to harvest human organs in a Kiev hospital.
