At 33 years old, Sun was the oldest competitor in the race, yet he demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination, finishing in three minutes 47.94 seconds, just behind gold medalist Liu Peixin, who won with a time of 3:46.80.
After starting the race in third place at the halfway point, Sun made a strong comeback in the latter half to secure the silver medal. His time also marked an improvement of a full second compared to his performance from the previous year. "This progress shows that I am better than the Sun Yang of last year, and I have achieved my goal," he remarked following the competition.
Regarding his training, Sun shared insights into his rigorous winter regimen, particularly noting the challenges he faced returning to high-altitude training after a five-year break. "It was very challenging and painful," he confessed. "I didn't have time for adjustments or breaks. I used competitions as part of my training, and I'm very satisfied with my performance today."
In preparation for the event, Sun revealed he had received knee injections over two days to manage pain. "I had injections in five points on my knee just to get through the race," he explained. "At this age, injuries are inevitable, but I have to persevere. As someone who has stayed in the sport for so long, I want to show young athletes that they can also persist until my age. Chinese swimming needs more athletes who can stay committed."
Other notable results from Wednesday's events included Sun Jiajun winning the men's 50m breaststroke with a time of 26.85 seconds, and Yu Yiting taking victory in the women's 50m butterfly with a time of 25.73 seconds. Additionally, Jiang Chenglin emerged victorious in the men's 100m backstroke, and Zhu Leiju won the women's 200m breaststroke.
