South Korea Makes Military Threat Against North
The recent deployment of 'trash balloons' by Pyongyang has prompted flight suspensions at Seoul's primary international airport, according to local media reports.

In light of this action, South Korea’s military has vowed a "stern" response should North Korea "cross the line" with its ongoing strategy of sending balloons filled with trash across the border. This escalation comes amid the long-standing confrontation between the two nations.

The warning was issued following a series of balloon launches by North Korea from Sunday evening into early Monday morning, which caused the flight disruptions. According to NK News, Col. Lee Sung-jun, a spokesperson for Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, remarked in a press briefing that such incidents are deemed "having a higher level of risk."

“If serious danger is caused to the safety of our citizens or if the North is assessed to have crossed the line, our military will take stern military measures,” Lee mentioned. When questioned about what defines this “line,” the spokesperson refrained from providing specifics. He noted that the military does not view the balloons as a significant threat to public safety "as long as there are no fatalities."

Reports from Yonhap highlighted that some of the balloons launched by the North are fitted with timers that "could potentially cause fires."

North Korea began its campaign of sending trash-laden balloons in May, claiming these actions are a response to propaganda balloons launched into the North. In retaliation, Seoul reinstated full-scale daily propaganda broadcasts using loudspeakers along the border in July.

Tensions between the two countries have recently escalated against the backdrop of North Korea’s missile tests and South Korea's joint military exercises with the US on the peninsula.
