Shenzhen has reported an increase in freight train shipments between China and Europe during the first half of the year.

Shenzhen Records Rise in China-Europe Freight Train Shipments in First Half of the Year
In the first half of 2024, a total of 96 China-Europe freight trains departed from Shenzhen, carrying a cumulative shipment value of 2.74 billion yuan (approximately $384.2 million). This represents a 34.2 percent increase compared to the previous year, according to Shenzhen Customs.

These trains traversed through Russia, Belarus, Poland, Germany, and other European nations, transporting over 100 types of goods, including electronic products, mechanical equipment, and clothing.

"Compared to maritime transport and air transport, China-Europe freight trains are less likely to be affected by nature and have high stability. They are very attractive to companies seeking to deliver products with certain volumes and high requirements for transport timeliness," stated Xu Zhenkang, an official with Shenzhen Customs.

Shenzhen Customs oversees a wide array of export categories, featuring high-value-added and high-tech items, such as electronic products and robots, alongside household goods and machinery, as noted by Xu.

Local companies have seen notable success in exporting electronic appliances, digital products, and other goods from Shenzhen via the China-Europe freight trains. An increasing number of products from the Pearl River Delta region, encompassing Foshan City and Zhongshan City, have also been routed through Shenzhen for export on these freight trains.

"China-Europe freight trains have become an important bridge connecting the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area with Europe. Since the beginning of this year, we have supported train operators to relaunch a Shenzhen-Budapest route so that enterprises can expand their markets and usher in more opportunities," Xu added.

Data indicates that during the first half of 2024, Shenzhen's total imports and exports reached 2.2 trillion yuan, marking a year-on-year increase of 31.7 percent and setting a record for the same period, which accounted for 10.4 percent of the national total.
