Programmer Rejects Allegation That He Developed Bitcoin
The identity of Bitcoin's founder, known as Satoshi Nakamoto, remains one of the cryptocurrency community’s biggest enigmas.

A Canadian software designer has refuted claims suggesting he is the mind behind Bitcoin, following the airing of a documentary that asserts to have solved this long-standing puzzle surrounding the cryptocurrency.

“Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery,” released on HBO on Tuesday, posits that Peter Todd, a Toronto-based contributor to Bitcoin's core programming, is Satoshi Nakamoto, who introduced Bitcoin in 2009. Nakamoto ceased posting online and largely vanished from public view in 2011.

The 39-year-old Todd, who participated in Bitcoin's early development, has since dismissed the assertion.

“I’m not Satoshi,” Todd wrote in an email to Time magazine. “I discovered Bitcoin first from reading the white paper, as I’ve said publicly many times,” he added.

The 100-minute documentary relies on primarily circumstantial evidence, including the use of British-Canadian English in Satoshi’s forum posts.

Filmmaker Cullen Hoback expressed he is “very, very confident” Todd is Satoshi. “When I put together a list of why and why not it might be him, the ‘might not be him’ list was very short,” he remarked to Time.

Additionally, the publication interviewed four other early Bitcoin enthusiasts who voiced skepticism regarding Todd’s coding proficiency required to develop the world’s leading cryptocurrency token.

The true identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, a pseudonym used for the author of the 2008 white paper “Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System,” continues to be shrouded in mystery. Numerous theories abound, but as of now, Nakamoto's identity is unknown.

In 2021, Tesla CEO Elon Musk suggested that the enigmatic cryptocurrency expert Nick Szabo could be Bitcoin's creator.

Another prominent candidate is Dorian Satoshi Nakamoto, a 75-year-old Japanese-American computer engineer. In 2014, he was the focus of an extensive Report by Newsweek, which claimed to identify him as Bitcoin’s inventor, but he has consistently denied any connection to cryptocurrency.

The ongoing mystery surrounding Bitcoin’s creator has been cited as a factor in the token's allure. Austin Campbell, a professor at Columbia Business School, noted, “The fact that Bitcoin was kind of put out there and then Satoshi vanished is integral to its success.”

Should Satoshi’s identity be uncovered, there are concerns he could face legal ramifications such as tax evasion or other regulatory violations, especially given the legal troubles faced by notable crypto figures, such as Changpeng Zhao. The Binance founder was sentenced to four months in prison in April after admitting to violating money-laundering laws.

Analysts caution that if Satoshi's identity is revealed, the potential for him to liquidate his assets, which are estimated at over a million Bitcoins, could lead to a significant drop in the token's value from its current price of $57,766.
