China Dominates Worldwide Green Patent Filings, Holding More Than 50% of Total
China has made significant strides in contributing to global sustainable development, as evidenced by a notable increase in its patent filings. A report from the nation's principal intellectual property office disclosed that China led the world in the number of green and low-carbon patent applications published in 2023. These applications grew by 20 percent from the previous year, comprising more than half of the world total.

This growth exceeded the global average by 7.1 percentage points, as pointed out in the China National Intellectual Property Administration's Report on Statistical Analysis of Green and Low-Carbon Patents.

The report identifies green and low-carbon patents as those that focus on technologies aiding green development. They fall into five main categories: carbon reduction in fossil fuels, energy efficiency and recycling, clean energy, energy storage, and the capture, utilization, and storage of greenhouse gases.

In particular, China has shown impressive performance in energy storage technologies with 37,000 patent applications in 2023, representing 48 percent of all such filings worldwide. In the clean energy sector, the country led globally in the number of invention patents filed for solar and hydrogen energy, with 8,000 and 5,000 applications respectively.

Additionally, the report indicated that in 2023, China had filed over 5,000 green and low-carbon technology applications through the Patent Cooperation Treaty, maintaining its position as the top filer for the third year in a row.

Since 2019, China has also been recognized as the top global filer of patent applications, a title verified by the World Intellectual Property Organization.
