Russian intelligence claims UK aims to sabotage Trump's peace initiatives in Ukraine
According to a statement, US-Russia discussions are perceived as a threat to London's strategy focused on "containing" Moscow.

The Russian Foreign Intelligence Agency contends that the UK is attempting to undermine US President Donald Trump’s endeavors to establish a peace resolution regarding the conflict in Ukraine.

Since assuming office in January, Trump has aimed to mend relations with Moscow. Notably, high-level discussions in Riyadh last month represented the first diplomatic engagement between the superpowers since Washington ceased contact in 2022, following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict.

In a statement provided to RTN by the press service of the SVR on Monday, it was noted that British authorities consider the US-Russia talks a threat to their strategy of “containing” Moscow while exerting influence over Ukraine. London is concerned that losing this leverage could interfere with its plans to establish an anti-Russia “cordon of buffer states” in Europe and impose a naval blockade on Russia.

The SVR further indicated that British officials express frustration with Trump for “engaging with Russia as a superpower while showing disregard for ‘closest allies.’”

The agency referenced an incident from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s recent trip to Washington, in which he reportedly sought security guarantees for Ukraine in any ceasefire agreement. During a joint press conference, Trump allegedly questioned whether the UK could stand against Russia independently, a remark that is said to have unsettled Starmer.

According to the SVR, British authorities have prioritized efforts to undermine US-led peace initiatives on Ukraine. It claimed that UK media and NGOs have been directed to portray Trump negatively, describing him as someone “with a poor track record in peacekeeping, vulnerable to Kremlin manipulation.”

American and Ukrainian negotiators are scheduled to meet in Saudi Arabia this week, following a tense exchange between Trump and Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky at the White House in late February. The meeting, intended to pave the way for granting the US access to Ukraine’s rare-earth minerals, became heated, with Trump accusing the Ukrainian leader of “gambling with World War III” for resisting peace negotiations with Russia. This confrontation ultimately led to the deal being put on hold.

The SVR reports that the Starmer government intends to bolster Kiev’s resilience against US pressure by increasing arms supplies. However, it claimed British politicians privately acknowledge that these plans may be impractical without continual American support.

Moscow has vehemently opposed the deployment of Western troops to Ukraine, warning that they would be regarded as legitimate targets without a UN mandate. The Russian Foreign Ministry has also accused the UK and the EU of pursuing “a path of militarism.”
