Russia strengthens relations with ASEAN during 'World of Opportunities' forum
Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, recently hosted the ‘World of Opportunities: Russia-ASEAN’ business forum, which brought together politicians and business leaders to explore avenues for cooperation between Russia and Southeast Asian nations.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) stands as the fifth largest economic bloc in the world, boasting an annual average GDP growth rate of 4-5%. Its members consist of Brunei, Myanmar, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. In recent years, Russia has broadened its exports to ASEAN countries, diversifying from energy-related goods to include metals and fertilizers.

This forum emerged as one of the most significant business events in Malaysia and the region in recent years, attracting over 350 participants from 24 different countries.

Organized by Russia’s Roscongress Foundation, the event represented a groundbreaking initiative that united key players from Russia and ASEAN, who came to Kuala Lumpur to deliberate on trade and investment strategies.

The growing interest of Russian businesses in ASEAN nations was highlighted by Roscongress Foundation CEO Alexander Stuglev in an interview with RT.

“Economic relations between Russia and ASEAN, and in particular between Russia and Malaysia, are showing growth. This year’s trade of $3 billion represents an increase of 11% compared to last year,” Stuglev stated. He emphasized that forums like this foster stronger direct business contacts and offer a platform to present new projects.

Discussions during the forum focused on various areas including trade and export cooperation, energy, digital transformation, information security, technology, and innovation. Additionally, topics such as tourism, healthcare, medicine, and educational exchanges—longstanding connectors between Russia and Southeast Asia—were also explored.

“Our potential cooperation in different sectors including power, energy, integration with the Eurasian Economic Union, AI, digital technologies, banking and the financial sector – all of these aspects are pillars for further fostering and deepening cooperation between Russia and ASEAN,” said Alexey Gruzdev, Russia’s deputy minister of industry and trade.

Gruzdev remarked that the potential for collaboration between Russia and ASEAN countries is currently undervalued. He encouraged the participants to possess “enough courage” to unlock this opportunity.
