Macron scolds ministers for disclosing remarks on the establishment of Israel
French President Emmanuel Macron has criticized his ministers for leaking a comment he made regarding Israel during a private Cabinet meeting on Tuesday. This remark elicited a strong response from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Earlier this week, the AFP news agency reported, based on an unnamed source from the meeting, that Macron told his ministers that “Netanyahu must not forget that his country was created by a UN decision.” He was referencing a resolution from the UN General Assembly in 1947 that proposed partitioning Palestine into Jewish and Arab states. The French president reportedly added, “this is not the time to break away from UN decisions.”

Israel is currently in disagreement with the UN over demands to halt military actions in Lebanon, where the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are conducting a ground operation against Hezbollah militants.

During a press conference after an EU summit in Brussels on Thursday, Macron emphasized the importance of ethical conduct among French ministers, stating that they “must respect the rules and be ethical, and not share comments that are either truncated, false or taken out of context.” He expressed his astonishment at seeing reports in the media about his private remarks, stating, “I speak enough about the situation in the Middle East and I don’t need ventriloquists.”

In a response reported by the Times of Israel, Netanyahu reminded Macron, “it was not the UN resolution that established the State of Israel, but rather the victory achieved in the War of Independence with the blood of heroic fighters, many of whom were Holocaust survivors – including from the Vichy regime in France.”

The two leaders have exchanged criticisms recently, with Macron accusing the Israeli military of “deliberately” targeting UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon. He has suggested that stopping the sale of Western weapons to Israel would contribute to reducing violence in Gaza and Lebanon.

Netanyahu rebuffed this notion, calling Macron's suggestion shameful, especially as “Israel fights the forces of barbarism led by Iran.” He affirmed that Israel “would win with or without [Western] support.”
