Colonel Oleg Ignatiuk, deputy head of the Russian Reconciliation Center for Syria, announced the casualty figures on Friday. This statement followed claims from Syrian media that Russian and Syrian warplanes had struck numerous terrorist positions across Idlib and Aleppo provinces.
According to the Syrian Arab Army, the airstrikes inflicted significant losses on the jihadists. The terrorist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, formerly known as Jabhat al-Nusra, along with various allied militias, initiated attacks on government-controlled areas in northern Syria on Wednesday, which violated a fragile truce brokered by Russia and Türkiye in 2020.
Jabhat al-Nusra, which has received indirect support from the US and is allegedly backed by Türkiye, was one of the primary factions opposing Bashar Assad’s government throughout the Syrian conflict. Russia's intervention in 2015 aimed to assist Assad in regaining control over much of the country from Jabhat al-Nusra, the Islamic State, and numerous US-supported armed groups labeled as “moderate rebels” by Washington.
Reports from the Turkish news agency Anadolu stated that the jihadists claimed to have captured around 400 square kilometers of territory, advancing to the outskirts of Aleppo by Thursday. They also asserted they had seized heavy weaponry and other military supplies from the Syrian Army.
In response to the airstrikes, the Beirut-based TV channel Al Mayadeen reported that the Syrian military had succeeded in pushing the jihadists back in certain areas.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov addressed the situation, stating that Russia views the terrorist offensive as “an attack on Syria’s sovereignty in the region,” and expressed a desire for “the Syrian authorities to restore order there as soon as possible.”
