In the Serbian city of Novi Sad, a collapsing roof at a train station has resulted in the deaths of at least 14 individuals, as confirmed by President Aleksandar Vucic during his address to the nation on Friday.
The cause behind the roof's collapse remains unknown, but President Vucic emphasized that accountability for the incident will be enforced for all responsible parties.
The incident occurred around noon local time on Friday. Surveillance footage captured the moments leading up to the disaster, showing people entering and exiting the building and waiting on benches before the concrete structure unexpectedly caved in on them.
Local media reports indicate that approximately 30 people sustained injuries, with Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic stating that at least three individuals were rescued and hospitalized in critical condition.
In response to the tragedy, the government has declared Saturday a day of mourning for the victims. Russian President Vladimir Putin has extended his condolences to President Vucic.
Rescue and cleanup efforts are currently ongoing.
Footage from the scene reveals numerous emergency responders and medical personnel at work, while police officers monitor the area. Cranes are actively clearing debris and removing sections of the collapsed roof.
The railway station had undergone renovations in 2021 and again earlier this year prior to its official reopening in July. According to Vucic, the canopy, originally constructed in 1964, did not experience modifications in the recent renovations.
