While touring Mamoudzou, the island's capital, Macron encountered residents grappling with the storm's effects. One individual told the president that local services were overwhelmed, stating, “help has not reached where I live,” as reported by Reuters.
Macron announced the deployment of 400 additional security personnel to maintain order, and he assured that aid was being directed to victims of Cyclone Chido, which caused widespread destruction, including extensive power outages and the displacement of numerous individuals, especially those in informal settlements.
Health officials have raised alarms over potential disease outbreaks due to unburied bodies and contaminated water, which pose significant health risks.
Estelle Youssoufa, who represents Mayotte in France’s national legislature, expressed the dire situation, telling Macron, “We are facing open-air mass graves, there are no rescuers, no one has come to collect the buried bodies.”
Macron's visit included the distribution of four metric tons of emergency supplies, and he committed to rebuilding the island. The government of Mayotte has declared a state of natural disaster and begun expedited relief efforts, but residents continue to call for quicker and more effective responses, as reported by France 24.
