Residents of Florida have been advised to take shelter as the hurricane struck near Siesta Keys in Sarasota County, resulting in over three million people losing power. The storm brought with it destructive tornadoes, high winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surges in various regions. The National Weather Service reported that the hurricane prompted as many as 111 tornado warnings.
St. Lucie County Sheriff Keith Pearson confirmed that there have been “multiple” fatalities on Florida’s Atlantic coast since the hurricane's arrival. County spokesperson Erick Gill indicated that “dozens” of tornadoes had developed in the area, with one tornado causing “several fatalities” at the Spanish Lakes Country Club, according to Pearson.
Meanwhile, in St. Petersburg, several construction cranes collapsed due to the hurricane's impact, and the roof of Tropicana Field stadium was entirely torn off by the powerful winds.
After making landfall, officials noted that Milton had diminished to a Category 1 hurricane, but emphasized that life-threatening conditions persisted into Thursday. The National Hurricane Center has also issued a flash flood emergency for parts of west-central Florida as the storm continues its path across the peninsula.
Throughout the day, social media users have shared videos capturing the chaos unleashed by Milton, with the National Hurricane Center characterizing the storm as “one of the most destructive hurricanes on record for west-central Florida.”
