Poll Reveals Most US Republicans Hostile Towards Zelensky
An Economist/YouGov survey reveals that 56% of GOP respondents now hold an unfavorable view of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, a significant rise from 40% just a week prior. This shift in sentiment follows a series of critiques directed at Zelensky by President Donald Trump.

Released on Thursday, the poll highlights how unfavorable perceptions of Zelensky among Republicans surged week-over-week. Trump's recent remarks suggested that Ukraine could have circumvented its ongoing conflict with Russia and labeled Zelensky as a “dictator without elections.” Although Trump later retracted his comment about labeling Zelensky a “dictator,” the initial statements seem to have influenced GOP attitudes.

Zelensky's presidential tenure officially concluded last May, yet he has opted not to call for new elections, citing the prevailing martial law. Russia, considering him illegitimate, maintains that legal authority in Ukraine is currently with the parliament.

In tandem with these findings, support for Ukraine among Republicans has decreased, with 47% expressing their backing in the conflict against Russia, down five points from the previous week. Overall, 58% of Americans still support Ukraine in this crisis.

In terms of Trump’s approval ratings, 47% of Americans view him favorably, while 50% have an unfavorable opinion of him.

Concerning international relations, the poll indicates that 40% of Americans see Russia as an ally or friend, contrasted with 38% who view it as unfriendly or as an enemy. The European Union gets a favorable rating from 35% of respondents, while 36% view it unfavorably. China is perceived as an ally or friend by only 16% of those surveyed, while a significant 64% regard it as an unfriendly nation or enemy.

This Economist/YouGov poll was conducted among 1,604 adult citizens across the US from February 23 to 25.

The survey was released amidst ongoing talks between the US and Russia aimed at restoring bilateral relations and addressing the Ukraine conflict. Both sides have described these discussions as productive. Simultaneously, Zelensky is poised to sign a deal with the US that would grant Washington access to Ukraine’s extensive mineral resource deposits as compensation for prior military assistance.

Zelensky has acknowledged that the US will not provide security guarantees within this agreement, a request that remains a priority for Kyiv. However, sources indicate that Zelensky will not enter into any further agreements with the US on this topic without clear assurances regarding security guarantees.
