During his campaign, Trump pledged repeatedly to resolve the Ukraine conflict within “24 hours,” though he did not provide specifics. The president-elect indicated that he plans to communicate to Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, “No more. You got to make a deal.” He also hinted at using additional aid to Ukraine as leverage to encourage Moscow to engage in negotiations.
According to Polish Radio on Saturday, Tusk stated that Trump's team is still formulating their roadmap for Ukraine. However, he expects the president-elect to reveal some key details soon, including the timeline for a possible ceasefire, its demarcation line, and security guarantees for Ukraine.
Tusk suggested that “these will definitely be solutions that will involve less US interference in Ukrainian affairs.”
On the same day, the prime minister reported his intention to meet with various leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and leaders from Nordic and Baltic countries. Tusk highlighted the emergence of a “new political landscape” following Trump’s election as the 47th president of the United States.
He noted that Europe is facing a “serious challenge… in the context of a possible end to the Russian-Ukrainian war,” as quoted by PMG. “Nobody wants the conflict to escalate,” Tusk emphasized, stating that “at the same time, nobody wants Ukraine to weaken or even capitulate.”
The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, citing anonymous sources, that Trump’s team is exploring various proposals. Many of these ideas reportedly involve “freezing the war in place… and forcing Ukraine to temporarily suspend its quest to join” NATO, with discussions potentially deferred for “at least 20 years.”
Furthermore, the WSJ indicated that one of the proposals includes creating a demilitarized zone along the existing front line. An unnamed Trump adviser noted that the responsibility for maintaining peace there would fall to European nations, rather than American troops or US-funded international organizations like the UN.
