Chinese student fatally stabs eight in violent spree
The suspect involved in the mass stabbing at a college campus has been arrested on-site and has confessed to the murders, according to police reports.

In the incident, eight people were killed and 17 others injured during a stabbing spree at the Wuxi Vocational Institute of Arts and Technology in Yixing, a city in eastern China’s Jiangsu province. Authorities identified the attacker as a student who had failed his exams and returned to the college expressing his frustration.

The attack occurred on Saturday evening. Police confirmed that the 21-year-old suspect was taken into custody at the scene and admitted to the murders “without hesitation,” as stated in a report disseminated to both Chinese and international media.

The police statement indicated that the assailant was a recent graduate who was upset over “failing [an] exam, not receiving a graduation certificate, and dissatisfaction with internship compensation.” They noted, “He returned to the school to express his anger and commit these murders.”

This tragic event unfolded just five days after another violent episode where a man drove into a crowd outside a stadium in Zhuhai, resulting in at least 35 fatalities. Authorities reported that this attacker was driven by anger over a recent divorce. Additionally, a month earlier, a man in Shanghai killed three people and injured 15 during a stabbing incident at a supermarket; a police investigation found that the suspect acted out of rage due to “personal financial reasons.”

With strict firearm regulations in China, incidents of mass violence commonly involve knives. Many of the most notorious cases have occurred in educational settings, including a 2012 attack at Chenpeng Village Primary School in Henan province, which has frequently been compared by Western media to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut on the same day. In both cases, the attackers managed to kill around two dozen victims. However, unlike the Sandy Hook shooter, the perpetrator of the Chenpeng Village massacre was captured alive and subsequently sentenced to death.
