Police: CEO Killed in “Hit” in New York City
UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was fatally shot by a masked assailant in Manhattan on Wednesday morning, according to the New York Police Department. After being rushed to a local hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.

At 50 years old, Thompson was set to deliver a speech at the UnitedHealthcare investor conference taking place at the Hilton Midtown in New York City.

The shooting occurred at 6:46 a.m. as Thompson approached the venue. Police reported that a masked man, who had been “milling around” the hotel area, suddenly drew a gun and began firing.

Thompson was hit multiple times in the chest and was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, but ultimately died from his wounds. Bloomberg and local station WPIX-TV noted that the NYPD is investigating the incident as a “targeted attack.”

Witnesses told the New York Post that they saw the shooter near the hotel, apparently waiting for Thompson. He was described as a white male dressed in a cream-colored jacket, a black face mask, and carrying a gray backpack.

Following the shooting, the suspect fled down an alley on foot and then rode away on a bicycle, according to eyewitness accounts.

Investigation efforts include searching for CCTV footage that may assist in identifying the shooter, as reported by the New York Daily News. The NYPD believes that the gunman may have been positioned in the alley waiting specifically for Thompson, suggesting the possibility of a contract hit.

Thompson joined UnitedHealth Group in 2004 and became the CEO of UnitedHealthcare in 2021.

Shortly after the incident, the investor conference was canceled when a spokesman informed attendees that the company was “dealing with a very serious… situation.”
