Pentagon Official Involved in Ukraine Leak Receives Extended Prison Sentence
Jack Teixeira, the former US Air National Guardsman, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for leaking classified documents related to the Ukraine conflict. A court in Boston issued the sentence following Teixeira's guilty plea in March to six counts of willful retention and transmission of national defense information, a violation of the Espionage Act.

While serving as an airman first class in the Massachusetts Air National Guard, Teixeira shared images of several classified documents on a private Discord server. These documents included a situation report regarding the Ukraine conflict and detailed information about US training of Ukrainian troops and the transportation of Western military equipment to Kyiv.

The leaks were made public in April 2023, inciting alarm in both Kyiv and Washington. An unnamed US official expressed frustration, stating, “We were blindsided and furious,” when the documents surfaced.

The timing of the leaks coincided with Ukraine's preparations for its summer counteroffensive in 2023, which commenced in June but ultimately did not achieve significant territorial gains.

In court on Tuesday, Teixeira conveyed regret for his actions, stating, “I’m sorry for all of the harm that I’ve wrought and that I’ve caused.” Prosecutors characterized his actions as “one of the most significant and consequential violations of the Espionage Act in American history.”

In an October court filing, prosecutors emphasized that “the harm the defendant caused to national security from his disclosures of national defense information is extraordinary.” During Tuesday’s proceedings, they further confirmed that the damage resulting from the leaks was “historic.”

Joshua Levy, the acting district attorney for Massachusetts, remarked that the sentence underscores “the gravity of this conduct and the enduring nature of the harm.”
