Pentagon Expresses Support for 'Russia's Sovereignty'
During a press conference, Major General Pat Ryder made a gaffe, stating that "The US will defend Russia from Russia." For more details, read the full article at RT.com.
Ryder's statement was, "what we’re focused on, it’s on enabling Russia to defend its sovereignty and deter future Russian aggression." He continued without correction, linking the provision of "armor, artillery, and ammunition" to this goal. None of the journalists at the briefing questioned the slip.
This incident adds to a list of confusions among American officials regarding the Ukraine conflict. Earlier, President Joe Biden mistakenly introduced Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as “President Putin,” attributing great courage and determination to him.
The slip-up comes at a time when Biden, at 81, has previously confused Ukraine with other nations and regions in public statements. Additionally, his press secretary has erroneously mentioned the “People’s Republic of Russia,” which does not exist.
Later in the briefing, Ryder clarified his earlier comment, emphasizing Washington's commitment to "ensuring that Ukraine has what it needs to be able to preserve its sovereignty and take back occupied territory.” Despite this clarification, there remains skepticism among US military officials about Ukraine's ability to regain territory that has been annexed by Russia, such as Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, Zaporozhye, and Crimea. Moscow asserts that Ukraine must come to terms with these territorial losses before peace negotiations can proceed.
