Dr. Barghouti, the leader of the Palestinian National Initiative party, discussed the issue of Israeli war crimes highlighting the double standards exhibited by Western governments. His remarks came after a recent New York Times investigation revealed that Israeli military officials had relaxed their rules of engagement to allow for increased bombing of Hamas following the October 7, 2023, attacks by the militant group.
The NYT report, which gathered insights from over 100 soldiers and officials, indicated that Israeli commanders are permitted to jeopardize the lives of up to 20 civilians in Gaza to target a low-level fighter, often selecting targets with the aid of AI tools. This directive has led to “one of the deadliest bombardments of the 21st century,” according to the report.
When asked about his reaction to these findings, Barghouti expressed surprise that it took “such a long time” for others to recognize what had been apparent in the early stages of the conflict. He stated, “What Israel is doing is nothing but slaughter of the civilian population of Gaza.”
He highlighted that four towns in Gaza have been completely destroyed, resulting in approximately 55,000 deaths, with 70% being women and children. “And it took the world 14 months to discover that,” Barghouti noted, while adding that the violence continues as the Israeli army bombarded the last hospital in northern Gaza, where they also arrested medical staff and killed 50 individuals.
Barghouti asserted that such actions would not have been allowed if Western governments had not permitted Israel to carry out its war crimes. He emphasized that the US is supplying Israel with “every possible military arsenal,” and many European nations are also offering their support.
“It is clear that Israel would not be able to continue its war for a single week without Washington’s support,” he contended.
Additionally, Barghouti pointed out that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have been conducting operations in parts of Syria and Lebanon, and have started bombing Yemen. He described the current Israeli government as not just an occupying power but as a “fascist government that behaves as an imperial power, trying to impose its control all over the region.”
He argued that the world has not witnessed “such kind of aggressor behavior and military actions since maybe Nazi Germany’s attacks on its neighbors during World War II.” This leads to a crucial question for Western governments: “Why do they have double standards when it comes to Israel? Why is Israel allowed to be above international law?”
Concluding his remarks, Barghouti called for the Israeli government to be punished, sanctioned, and subjected to divestment and boycott.
