"Only two genders," US flag on Mars and end to war: Highlights from Trump's inaugural speech
The newly sworn-in US president has articulated his priorities for his new term.

Donald Trump took the oath of office as the 47th president of the United States on Monday, marking a historic moment as he becomes only the second president to serve non-consecutive terms. In his inaugural address, Trump shared his vision for ushering in an American “golden age,” covering a range of topics such as energy independence, immigration reform, the cessation of global conflicts, and the colonization of Mars.

Here are the key takeaways from his speech.

‘Golden age of America’
“The golden age of America begins right now,” Trump declared, asserting that the US “will soon be greater, stronger and far more exceptional than ever before.” He characterized the previous four years as marked by “betrayals” of the American people by “a radical and corrupt establishment,” proclaiming his inauguration day to be “Liberation Day.”

“From this moment on, America’s decline is over,” he stated, explaining that his forthcoming executive actions will initiate “the complete restoration of America and the revolution of common sense.”

Immigration emergency
Trump announced an immediate suspension of “all illegal entry” into the US at the southern border, the reinstatement of his policy requiring asylum seekers to wait in Mexico, the termination of the release of illegal entrants into the US, and the initiation of deportation for “millions and millions of criminal aliens” back to their home countries.

Mexican drug cartels will be designated as foreign terrorist organizations, and foreign criminal gangs operating in certain US cities will be pursued under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, according to the new president.

‘Drill, baby, drill’
Trump suggested that the US possesses abundant natural resources that can secure its energy independence and bolster its standing globally. He expressed plans to declare a national energy emergency to facilitate new drilling for oil and gas, while also aiming to abolish the “Green New Deal” advocated by Democrats.

“We will export American energy all over the world. We will be a rich nation again, and it is that liquid gold under our feet that will help to do it,” he remarked.

Tariffs and taxes
Trump expressed his commitment to transforming the US back into “a manufacturing nation once again.” He pledged to reform trade policy to safeguard American workers and announced the establishment of the External Revenue Service to collect tariffs and duties on imports.

“Instead of taxing our citizens to enrich other countries, we will tariff and tax foreign countries to enrich our citizens,” he noted.

The big gender question
Trump declared that the US will end policies aimed at “trying to socially engineer race and gender into every aspect of public and private life.” He stated that, effective immediately, government policy will recognize “there are only two genders – male and female.”

“We will forge a society that is color blind and merit-based,” he asserted, rejecting the “radical political theories and social experiments” that have been imposed on Americans, including within the military.

Wars not fought
Trump promised to “build the strongest military the world has ever seen” to reclaim the US’s status as “the greatest, most powerful, most respected nation on Earth.” He conveyed his intent to act as a unifier and peacemaker.

“We will measure our success not only by the battles we win, but also by the wars that we end, and perhaps most importantly, the wars we never get into,” he said.

Gulf of Mexico and Panama Canal
Trump stated that the US will seek to regain control of the Panama Canal from Panama, contending that it “totally violated” the 1977 treaty that granted it back, alleging collaboration with China. He also announced plans to officially rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America and restore the name Mount McKinley to the highest peak in North America, which had been changed to Denali in 2015.

Although Trump has made recent comments regarding Greenland, he did not address the autonomous Danish island in his inaugural speech, despite claiming its control was a matter of US national security.

US flag on Mars
Towards the end of his address, Trump called for Americans to “once again act with courage, vigor and the vitality of history’s greatest civilization.” He argued for the US to behave as a “growing nation” that expands both territory and wealth.

“We will pursue our manifest destiny into the stars, launching American astronauts to plant the Stars and Stripes on the planet Mars,” he proclaimed, referencing the doctrine of continental expansion and the ambitions of his backer, Elon Musk, to settle another planet.
