Musk Teases US Treasury Secretary's Understanding of Technology
Hackers reportedly breached Janet Yellen’s work computer last month

Tech billionaire and close ally of President-elect Donald Trump, Elon Musk, has poked fun at US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s computer skills following a reported hack of her workstation.

As reported by Bloomberg, Yellen’s work computer, as well as those belonging to two of her close aides, were compromised by a hacker group in early December. The breach has been attributed to attackers exploiting a vulnerability in the software of a third-party contractor.

Musk reacted to the news with a series of sarcastic posts on X, implying that Yellen was not adequately tech-savvy.

“A 12-year-old script kiddie could hack into Yellen’s computer. I doubt she knows how to reboot her WiFi router,” he remarked, though he did not provide details on how he gauged the 78-year-old official’s technical proficiency.

“Maybe she clicked on the ‘send me 1 btc, I send you 2 btc’ email,” he quipped in another post, adding a ‘tears-of-joy’ emoji to illustrate his hypothetical scenario of Yellen falling victim to a cryptocurrency scam.

The US government has identified a hacker group known as ‘Silk Typhoon’ and ‘UNC5221’ as responsible for the cyberattack, asserting that they are backed by the Chinese government. Beijing, however, has denied any involvement, claiming the US is fabricating allegations of cyberespionage as a smear tactic to justify economic sanctions.

Yellen is expected to soon depart from her leadership role at the Treasury, which enforces the economic restrictions that Washington imposes on other nations. Hedge fund manager Scott Bessent is slated to take over her position under the Trump administration.

During his confirmation hearings on Thursday, Bessent informed US senators that he would be “100% on board” with intensifying sanctions against Russia if Trump decides to adopt a more aggressive pressure strategy after taking office on Monday.

Musk had previously criticized Yellen’s management of the Treasury, suggesting in April 2023 that billionaire investor Warren Buffett would be better suited for the role.
