On Wednesday, NATO Secretary General Rutte emphasized the necessity for member states to offer long-term assistance to Ukraine, enabling them to eventually recover land lost to Russia. “We have to make sure that defense aid will keep flowing to Ukraine,” he stated during a joint press conference with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. He noted that continued support in terms of arms and funding would enable Ukraine “from a position where they are losing territory [to one where] they are able to stabilize the front and then to win back from the Russians what they have lost.”
As Donald Trump prepares to assume the presidency, European members of the US-led military alliance are ramping up support. Trump has previously expressed criticisms regarding the amount of aid sent to Ukraine under President Joe Biden and has suggested that European nations should take on a greater share of the responsibility. Meanwhile, the Democratic leadership has committed to backing Ukraine for “as long as it takes” to overcome Russia.
During his campaign, Trump also claimed he could bring about a peaceful resolution to the conflict in 24 hours if elected. Following his recent victory, reports indicate he plans to fulfill this assertion by using American assistance as leverage to influence both Kiev and Moscow.
According to media reports, Russian troops have been making rapid advances, particularly after Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky ordered an incursion into Russia's Kursk Region in August, deploying some of his most well-equipped forces. The conflict has led to over 32,000 casualties for Ukrainian forces as they strive to maintain control over Russian territory.
Russian officials have characterized the situation in Ukraine as a Western proxy war against their nation, asserting that the US and its allies are prepared to engage in this conflict “to the last Ukrainian.” Moscow is determined to achieve its national security objectives in the face of the resources being funneled into Ukraine by the US and its allies.
Both Rutte and Tusk continue to be strong advocates for Ukraine, emphasizing that the conflict's ramifications extend beyond the region and affect global security, particularly in light of reports suggesting the deployment of North Korean troops to Russia—a claim neither Moscow nor Pyongyang has confirmed or denied.
