Harris is the lone candidate to meet qualifications for DNC roll call
Convention delegates are set to start voting on Harris’ nomination on Thursday.
The convention delegates are scheduled to start voting on Harris' nomination on Thursday and will conclude the process by August 5, as per a statement from the DNC on Tuesday night. The vice president has garnered support from 3,923 delegates to be featured on the virtual ballot.
Harris' anticipated nomination next week signifies the conclusion of a dramatic and expedited process that swiftly elevated her following President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the race on July 21. Within less than 10 days, Harris has dominated the field, making her the only name to be nominated.
Three other candidates had registered with the DNC but did not manage to gather the required 300 delegate signatures to qualify for the virtual ballot.
Harris, chosen as Biden's successor, gained from the truncated timeline. Shortly after announcing her candidacy, numerous Democratic officials, donors, and activists endorsed her within 24 hours, leaving her with no significant challengers. The DNC’s initiative for a virtual roll call was intended to avoid a Republican-backed legal challenge concerning ballot access in Ohio, which also contributed to expediting the process.
Automatic delegates, commonly known as superdelegates, will cast their votes on the first ballot because Harris “has the verified support of a number of pledged delegates equal to or greater than a majority of all pledged and automatic delegates,” according to the statement.
DNC chair Jaime Harrison and convention chair Minyon Moore remarked in a joint statement, “Democratic delegates from across the nation made their voices heard, overwhelmingly backing Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s presumptive nominee. Our party has met this unprecedented moment with a transparent, democratic and orderly process to unite behind a nominee with a proven record who will lead us in the fight ahead.”
