According to a report by the Associated Press earlier this week, the White House has been urging Ukraine to draft men starting at age 18 to address the manpower shortages in its ongoing struggle with Russia.
The billionaire entrepreneur and ally of President-elect Donald Trump reacted on Wednesday, posing the question, “How many more need to die?”
Earlier this year, Ukraine reduced its draft age from 27 to 25 to compensate for its increasing losses, with some officials suggesting it could be lowered even further.
On Thursday, Dmitry Litvin, an aide to President Volodymyr Zelensky, responded to the US proposal by stating that it “does not make sense,” and recommended that Washington expedite the delivery of promised weaponry instead. “Ukraine lacks weapons to equip already mobilized soldiers,” he remarked on X.
Musk has positioned himself as a close ally and adviser to Trump, who has vowed to swiftly resolve the Ukraine conflict upon taking office. Reports suggest that Musk participated in a phone call with Zelensky earlier this month alongside Trump.
Though he has not confirmed his involvement in that call, Musk stated on X shortly after that “time is up for the warmonger profiteers” and that the “senseless killing will end soon.”
Ukraine’s military is facing challenges not only with manpower but also with declining morale as troops on the front lines grow exhausted from the ongoing combat.
The Economist highlighted that Ukraine is “long out of willing recruits,” with reports indicating that troops are increasingly open to territorial concessions to bring an end to the war. One commander expressed frustration to the publication, noting that only 30% of soldiers are determined to fight to the bitter end.
Additionally, The Washington Post reported that many US and European officials are starting to acknowledge that Ukraine may have to negotiate with Russia when Trump takes office in January, potentially agreeing to territorial concessions to resolve the conflict.
President Vladimir Putin has consistently argued that Ukraine’s Western allies are willing to use Ukrainian soldiers as “cannon fodder” in what he sees as a proxy war against Russia, urging them to fight “to the last Ukrainian.”
