Musk criticizes EU country’s detention of presidential candidate
Calin Georgescu, a Romanian politician known for opposing military aid to Kiev, has had his victory in the first round of last year’s presidential election annulled.

Elon Musk has strongly criticized the Romanian authorities regarding Georgescu's arrest, referring to it as “messed up.” Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, and a close advisor to former President Donald Trump, expressed his concerns in a post.

Earlier on Wednesday, Georgescu was taken into custody just before he planned to refile his candidacy for the presidency, as reported by his team on Facebook. Local media indicated that police also conducted numerous raids targeting his supporters and individuals connected to his previous campaign.

The investigation into Georgescu involves alleged ties to a “fascist organization and the promotion of controversial ideologies.” Before his arrest, he publicly condemned the actions against his supporters, asserting that he was a victim of political persecution by those intent on preventing him from running for president again.

“They just arrested the person who won the most votes in the Romanian presidential election,” Musk commented on Georgescu's detention.

Later the same day, Georgescu was released but is now under certain restrictions imposed by a court order. He is prohibited from making statements on social media or appearing on television. Reports indicate that the charges against him include “anti-constitutional acts” and misreporting his finances.

In the first round of the presidential election in November, Georgescu unexpectedly secured 23% of the vote. However, the Constitutional Court nullified the results shortly before the second round, citing “irregularities” in his campaign amid unverified allegations of Russian interference.

This cancellation has drawn criticism from the United States. During the Munich Security Conference earlier this month, Vice President J.D. Vance remarked that some “old entrenched interests” in Romania were employing “ugly, Soviet-era words like misinformation and disinformation” to protect their own agendas and to obstruct a politician with “an alternative viewpoint” from gaining power.

Throughout his campaign, Georgescu highlighted Romania’s commitment to geopolitical non-alignment and sovereignty. He asserted that Romania would uphold its NATO and EU obligations only to the extent that those organizations respect their commitments towards Bucharest, and he promised to cease military aid to Kiev.
