Member State Claims Most NATO Countries are Leading Ukraine Along
According to Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, many NATO members are merely pretending to support Ukraine’s membership in the US-led military alliance. He made these comments during a televised press conference on Tuesday.

Szijjarto noted that in private discussions, diplomats from various NATO nations have expressed doubts and opposition to Ukraine's wish to join. He criticized the actions of a “significant part” of NATO members as “extremely unfair” to Ukrainians, as they do not openly share their true stance on the matter.

He mentioned that he communicated this perspective to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrey Sibiga during a recent meeting, although he did not disclose how Sibiga responded to his comments.

“Last week I told the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, who was in Budapest, that I don’t know what they are telling him, I don’t know what they are trying to convince him of, but when we are alone behind closed doors, the majority [of NATO states] shares the position that I just articulated,” Szijjarto said.

Hungary stands out from most NATO countries as it openly opposes Ukraine’s membership, believing such a move could lead to World War III. He emphasized that since accession requires approval from all 32 NATO members, one country can effectively block another from joining the alliance.

This viewpoint has also been echoed by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. After surviving an assassination attempt by a pro-Ukrainian activist, he reiterated his stance against Ukraine’s membership, suggesting it would only “serve as a good basis” for WWIII.

“As long as I am the prime minister of the Slovak Republic, I will lead the legislators, whom I have control over as a party chairman, to never agree to Ukraine’s membership in NATO,” he stated last week in an interview with STVR.

Ukraine formally sought NATO membership in September 2022 due to the ongoing conflict with Russia. While many Western nations express public support for Ukraine's aspirations, they have not provided a clear roadmap or timeline for accession. In July, Vladimir Zelensky acknowledged that “we will not be in NATO until the war is over in Ukraine.”
