Musk Claims Largest Fraud in U.S. History
The number of individuals receiving social security payments surpasses the total number of American citizens, according to claims made by Elon Musk, the billionaire head of the Department of Government Efficiency.

Musk has expressed concerns about the US Social Security Administration, alleging extensive fraud. He stated that a preliminary examination of Social Security records conducted by his department revealed that benefits were being paid to people as old as 150 years. He also highlighted that many entries for Social Security recipients lacked identifying information.

In a post on X earlier this week, Musk asserted, “there are far more ‘eligible’ social security numbers than there are citizens in the USA.” He shared a post from another X user indicating that approximately 394,943,364 individuals are receiving Social Security payments, while noting that the total US population is around 334 million. Musk concluded that “this might be the biggest fraud in history.”

Musk has claimed that some individuals listed as alive in the Social Security Administration’s records are reportedly over 150 years old. He further elaborated, “According to the Social Security database, these are the numbers of people in each age bucket with the death field set to false!” Adding a touch of humor, he remarked, “Maybe Twilight is real and there are a lot of vampires collecting Social Security,” referencing the popular vampire-themed series.

The Department of Government Efficiency was established by Trump to streamline federal operations and aims to reduce federal spending by $2 trillion by 2026. Musk noted that cuts totaling up to $1 trillion could be achievable.

Since Trump's inauguration on January 20, the newly-formed department, which is not a permanent federal executive agency despite its name, has made significant cutbacks, including the dismantling of the United States Agency for International Development and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The Department of Government Efficiency has also imposed stringent restrictions on National Institutes of Health grants as part of a broader initiative to enhance government efficiency.
