Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has accused the United States of exacerbating cartel violence through the unchecked flow of firearms into Mexico. This statement comes as a rebuttal to claims made by President Donald Trump that Mexico is insufficiently addressing illegal migration and drug trafficking.
Her comments, made late Saturday, followed her decision to impose retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods in response to Trump's sweeping 25% duties on imports from Mexico and Canada.
“We categorically reject the slander made by the White House against the Government of Mexico, accusing it of having alliances with criminal organizations,” Sheinbaum stated in a passionate post on X. “If such an alliance exists anywhere, it is in the gun stores of the United States, which sell high-powered weapons to these criminal groups – as demonstrated by the US Department of Justice itself.”
Sheinbaum’s remarks seem to refer to a recent report from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which revealed that a considerable number of military-grade firearms utilized by Mexican cartels trace back to the United States.
She also highlighted her administration's efforts in fighting narcotics, claiming that over the past four months, Mexican security forces have confiscated more than 40 tons of drugs, including 20 million fentanyl doses, and apprehended over 10,000 individuals associated with organized crime.
Further, she criticized the U.S. government's strategy regarding the drug crisis, asserting that if Washington were genuinely committed to combating drug abuse, it would “start a massive campaign to prevent the consumption of these drugs and take care of its young people, as we have done in Mexico.”
Trump's new tariffs, scheduled to commence on February 4, will impose a 25% duty on goods from Mexico and Canada, along with a 10% duty on imports from China. The U.S. administration justifies these tariffs by citing concerns over illegal immigration and drug trafficking, particularly regarding fentanyl entering the U.S.
In response, Sheinbaum has instructed the Ministry of Economy to “implement the Plan B that we have been working on, which includes tariff and non-tariff measures in defense of Mexico’s interests.” While specifics remain undisclosed, sources suggest that Mexico plans to target key U.S. industries, primarily agriculture, while aiming to prevent further escalation of trade tensions.
The Mexican leader emphasized the need for cooperative efforts to tackle the drug crisis, insisting on equality in the partnership. “If the United States truly wants to combat the criminal groups that traffic drugs and generate violence, we must work together comprehensively,” she declared. “But always under the principles of shared responsibility, mutual trust, collaboration, and, above all, respect for sovereignty, which is non-negotiable.”
