Thousands of employees at Meta may lose their jobs this year as part of broader performance-based cuts, as indicated in an internal memo from CEO Mark Zuckerberg, which was referenced by Bloomberg and various other media outlets on Tuesday.
In the memo, which was reportedly distributed to all Meta employees, the company announced its intention to eliminate around 5% of staff deemed to be its lowest performers, with an acknowledgment that 2025 will be “an intense year.” Employees affected by the cuts will be informed by February 10 and will receive “generous severance” consistent with prior packages offered by the company.
Zuckerberg stated that he had “decided to raise the bar on performance management," mentioning that the company usually “manage out people who aren’t meeting expectations over the course of a year.” However, there are plans to implement “more extensive performance-based cuts” at an earlier stage than usual.
These layoffs will be the largest for Meta since it reduced its workforce by 21,000 jobs, nearly a quarter of its total staff, in 2022 and 2023. The company currently employs over 72,000 individuals, according to its latest quarterly report.
Recently, Zuckerberg revealed that Meta aims to replace mid-level engineers with Artificial Intelligence this year, hinting that the technology could take over a significant portion of the coding tasks that are currently handled by human engineers.
In a significant policy shift, the tech giant has declared an end to its fact-checking service, which it claims has become “too politically biased,” and is adopting a system resembling the ‘Community Notes’ framework used by Elon Musk’s platform X. Additionally, it announced the removal of rules that previously imposed restrictions on discussions related to topics such as immigration and gender identity.
Meta has also opted to eliminate its diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, revising its hiring practices that previously considered applicants' gender and racial background. Reports suggest these changes are already being implemented across the company’s offices, including an instruction to remove tampons from male restrooms, along with the removal of transgender and non-binary themes from the company’s messenger app.
Zuckerberg noted that these changes were influenced by the recent political climate in the United States, particularly following the election of Donald Trump.
