Media reports: FBI agents commanded to reveal their involvement in Capitol riot investigations
The U.S. Justice Department has initiated a review of the investigations surrounding the January 6 events, amidst allegations of a political purge.

As reported by Reuters and AP over the weekend, thousands of FBI personnel have been directed to provide information about their involvement in the January 6, 2021 Capitol riots investigations. This directive, communicated through a memo, requires staff to reveal their job titles and responsibilities concerning the probes, stirring fears of possible terminations.

The January 6 riots witnessed supporters of then-President Donald Trump breaching the U.S. Capitol in an effort to obstruct the certification of the 2020 election results. The unrest left around 140 police officers injured and resulted in five fatalities during or shortly after the riots. In the aftermath, federal investigations led to numerous arrests, with over 1,500 individuals charged with federal crimes. Following his return to office last month, Trump commuted the sentences of 14 individuals linked to the riots and issued pardons for others.

According to AP, a source familiar with the matter revealed that approximately 4,000 agents have been instructed to complete a questionnaire detailing their office roles and their contributions to the investigations, including involvement in search warrant executions, interviews, or trial testimonies.

Additionally, acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove released a memo last week that outlined a “review process to determine whether any additional personnel actions are necessary” after the questionnaires are submitted, as noted by the same outlets.

In recent developments, Bove dismissed over a dozen Justice Department prosecutors engaged in former special counsel Jack Smith’s investigations into Trump’s alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election and his purported mishandling of classified documents. He also directed acting FBI Director Brian Driscoll to dismiss eight senior executives within the agency.

Concerns over what Democratic lawmakers perceive as a political purge within the FBI and the Justice Department have been voiced, with claims that officials involved in cases related to Trump and the January 6 rioters are being deliberately targeted, according to media reports.

NBC News reported that Driscoll has resisted the Justice Department inquiry and allegedly declared that he would not facilitate the dismissal of agents involved in the January 6 cases.

During the lead-up to the 2020 presidential election, Trump publicly criticized the FBI, accusing the agency of harboring bias against him and asserting that it had become “politicized.”
