"Major Blaze" at UK Nuclear Shipyard
A fire has erupted at a shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness where British nuclear submarines are constructed, resulting in injuries to two individuals, according to officials. Read Full Article at RT.com.
The incident occurred around 12:30 am on Wednesday at the Barrow-in-Furness facility operated by defense contractor BAE Systems. Reports indicate that two people were taken to the hospital due to what seemed to be smoke inhalation.
“There is no nuclear risk. However, people living nearby are advised to remain indoors whilst emergency services respond to the incident and keep doors and windows closed,” the police stated, adding that evacuation measures have been implemented for those in the vicinity of the fire, and all individuals have been accounted for.
Social media has been filled with photos and videos depicting a plume of smoke rising from the shipbuilding facility.
A nuclear submarine shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness, UK, continues to battle ongoing flames as emergency responders work to contain the situation. The fire reportedly started within Devonshire Dock Hall, the facility’s main building.
Currently, the UK is in the process of enhancing its nuclear submarine fleet and plans to introduce four new Dreadnought-class ballistic missile submarines by the 2030s. These vessels are set to replace the Vanguard class and will similarly be equipped to launch missiles that can carry nuclear warheads.
Additionally, in September, the UK made a commitment of £4 billion to advance the development of SSN-AUKUS nuclear-powered submarines, which will be constructed in Barrow-in-Furness.
