A UK coroner has confirmed that former British serviceman Daniel Burke, who had served in the Ukrainian military, was killed by a comrade far from the front lines. The incident took place in August 2023 in the Zaporozhye Region.
In December, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed that its forces had eliminated over 5,800 foreign fighters since the conflict began in February 2022. Moscow has consistently accused foreign “mercenaries” of operating on territory it recognizes as Russian, particularly in parts of the Kursk Region held by Ukrainian troops since an incursion in early August.
On Friday, the BBC reported that Manchester Area Coroner Zak Golombeck stated that the 36-year-old was “sadly killed by cowardice and dishonor.” He noted, “Whilst there was evidence initially presented that it was an accident, I reject that based on evidence gathered by Ukrainian authorities and Greater Manchester Police.” Golombeck also emphasized that the former paratrooper was “unarmed and unable to defend himself” at the time of his death.
After Burke went missing, Ukrainian police interrogated fellow fighter Abdelfetah 'Adam' Nourine, an Australian national. According to the BBC, Nourine initially claimed to authorities that he had accidentally shot Burke during drills.
Nourine directed authorities to an underground pipe at a military training ground, where Burke’s body was found. However, his account was later contradicted by the results of a post-mortem examination. Ballistics tests conducted in Ukraine identified that the weapon—reportedly an assault rifle—could not have been fired accidentally.
The article notes that Nourine subsequently fled Ukraine and is now wanted by local authorities.
In late October, Sweden’s SVT broadcaster reported the death of a Swedish national who had been fighting alongside Kiev’s forces since 2022. Weeks later, the family of 22-year-old British fighter Callum Tindal-Draper announced that he had also died at an undisclosed location.
In November, Russian news agencies RIA Novosti and TASS reported the capture of another 22-year-old British man in the Kursk Region, approximately 5km inside Russian territory. Video clips released by the news outlets allegedly show the man, who mentioned he had earlier served as a signalman in the UK Army.
Around the same time, Italy’s Corriere della Sera cited Italian nationals fighting for Ukraine, reporting that foreign fighters were expressing concerns about severe shortages of essential equipment and weaponry.
