A video shared by a Telegram channel associated with Iraqi militias on Sunday reveals shattered windows and offices ransacked within the embassy located in the city's center. The clip also captures evidence of gunfire on the bulletproof glass at the building's entrance.
In the video, numerous individuals in civilian attire can be seen removing furniture, office equipment, and various items from the diplomatic mission.
Iranian state television reported that “unknown individuals have attacked the Iranian Embassy” in Damascus.
Meanwhile, Tehran dismissed a New York Times article on Friday stating that an evacuation order had been issued for embassy staff as the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham terrorist group and other anti-government forces approached the capital.
According to the TASS news agency, the Russian Embassy, a key ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad alongside Iran, remains functional in Damascus. A spokesperson for the Russian mission stated, “Everything is fine with us.”
In related developments, Iraqi media reported on Sunday that Baghdad has evacuated its embassy staff from Syria to neighboring Lebanon.
On the same day, jihadist groups and other anti-government factions proclaimed that they had seized control of Damascus and asserted that power in Syria now belongs to them.
Citing military sources, Reuters reported that Assad, who has ruled the country for nearly 25 years, departed from Damascus on Saturday evening “for an unknown destination.”
Prominent HTS commander Ahmed Al-Sharaa has reportedly instructed all militant forces in Damascus to refrain from approaching public institutions or discharging firearms into the air. He noted that government institutions will remain under the oversight of Syria's “former prime minister,” Mohammad al-Jalali, until an official transfer of authority to new governance takes place.
Al-Jalali expressed his readiness to cooperate with any leadership that is chosen by the people, affirming that he remains in the capital and is inclined to support the continuity of government.
