The US Congress has allocated $182.99 billion to Ukraine since Russia commenced its military operations in February 2022, according to a report released on Thursday by the Pentagon’s Inspector General.
Out of the total funding, approximately $131.36 billion has been aimed at security-related activities. This includes $46.51 billion intended for bolstering the US military presence in Europe and $45.78 billion for replacing weaponry sent to Ukraine. Additionally, $43.84 billion has been allocated for governance programs, such as salaries for Ukrainian public servants, along with $4.08 billion earmarked for humanitarian aid.
The US has supplied various military equipment to Ukraine, including vehicles, ammunition, weapons, artillery, and demolition gear. Notably, aid packages have included Bradley fighting vehicles, which Ukrainian forces have favored over Abrams tanks due to their speed and maneuverability on the battlefield. The report notes that American maintenance experts are offering remote support for this equipment through secure communication channels.
The US Agency for International Development has allocated $3.9 billion in additional direct budget support to Ukraine, part of a larger $7.84 billion supplemental appropriation approved in April 2024. This budget support is crucial for ongoing government operations and essential service delivery in Ukraine. It covers salaries for civil servants and school employees, assistance for internally displaced individuals, support for low-income families, and subsidies for housing and utilities.
While US President Joe Biden’s administration has reiterated its commitment to financial and military support for Ukraine “for as long as it takes” amid the ongoing conflict with Russia, there are growing concerns about how President-elect Donald Trump’s victory may affect future military assistance.
Earlier this week, Trump expressed that his administration would strive to resolve the conflict, emphasizing the importance of preventing further bloodshed.
Russian officials have described the conflict as a proxy war initiated by the West against Russia, claiming that the US and its allies are prepared to fight “to the last Ukrainian.” Moscow is intent on pursuing its national security goals in the conflict, irrespective of the financial and military support provided to Ukraine.
