Key Biden Advocate Reports President's Consideration of November Options
One of the national co-chairs of President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign acknowledged Friday that the president is assessing which potential candidate is best suited to defeat Donald Trump, as Biden continues to face growing pressure from fellow Democrats to pass the baton to a new nominee.

Speaking at the Aspen Security Forum, Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.), one of Biden’s closest Senate allies and a co-chair of Biden’s 2024 campaign, stated that the president is contemplating his next steps and consulting with advisers as he determines his political future.

“I think our president is weighing what he should weigh, which is who is the best candidate to win in November and to carry forward the Democratic Party's values and priorities in this campaign,” he told The Washington Post’s Ellen Nakashima, who was moderating a discussion with Coons and other senators on foreign policy.

The Biden campaign referred POLITICO to comments from campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon on MSNBC’s Morning Joe on Friday. O’Malley Dillon affirmed, “absolutely the president is in this race, you've heard him say that time and time again... He is the best person to take on Donald Trump."

Coons also emphasized his support for Biden during the forum and later reiterated on X that "he's told me he's in it to win it. I'm with him 100% because I know he can beat Trump just like he did last time."

Coons’ statement comes as Biden faces relentless pressure, both publicly and privately, to step down and allow a younger candidate to challenge Trump and running mate JD Vance in November.

On Friday, several congressional Democrats joined the calls for Biden to step aside, despite the Biden campaign's efforts to halt the political fallout and soothe anxious Democrats following a difficult debate performance in June. Biden has been holding listening calls with groups such as the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and Congressional Black Caucus for several weeks to bolster support and address concerns.

Meanwhile, top Democrats, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and former President Barack Obama, have reportedly been maneuvering to persuade Biden to withdraw from the race.

Biden surrogates and campaign spokespersons have denied media reports that the president is reconsidering the future of the ticket and contemplating stepping down.
