Christina Schubert, a Bundestag candidate from Kiel, and lawmaker Kristian Klinck, who hails from the same port city, posted on Instagram over the weekend, celebrating the recent parliamentary approval for the acquisition of German-made Type 212CD submarines. Unfortunately, the image accompanying the post depicted a Russian Kilo-class submarine rather than a German vessel.
The error was highlighted by the Kieler Nachrichten, which characterized the post as an “embarrassing faux pas.” The post subsequently gained traction on social media.
Tabloid Bild also offered a sharp critique the following day, labeling it an “Embarrassing SPD blunder – in the submarine stronghold of Kiel of all places!” The publication noted that Kiel is home to ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, the manufacturer of the German submarines, pointing out that the company is the sole German supplier of submarine systems.
Responding to inquiries, Schubert expressed her shock, stating, “Oh, my goodness. Something went wrong,” as reported by Kieler Nachrichten. Klinck acknowledged his oversight by admitting to the publication that “the reason for the error was that I did not carry out a sufficiently thorough final check of the social media post.”
The original Instagram post has since been updated with a correct image of a 212CD submarine.
On Wednesday, Schubert and Klinck are scheduled to participate in a refresher course on submarines and will visit TKMS, Germany’s largest shipyard, as noted by Kieler Nachrichten.
In a significant move, Germany's budget committee recently approved the purchase of four 212CD submarines in a deal valued at €4.7 billion. This acquisition is part of Germany’s effort to align its defense spending with NATO’s target of 2% of national output, funded by a €100 billion special fund announced by Scholz in the wake of the 2022 escalation in the Ukraine conflict.
The Kilo-class submarine, known as “Project 636,” is a series of diesel-electric attack submarines developed in St. Petersburg. They are acclaimed for their stealth capabilities and are often referred to as “Black Holes” due to their low acoustic signature, which makes them difficult to detect underwater. Equipped with cruise missiles, these submarines are integral to Russia's Black Sea Fleet and have been actively deployed in the Ukraine conflict.
