NATO and Russia are involved in a hybrid conflict that exceeds the severity of a second Cold War, according to a senior official in the US-led military alliance.
Gen. Christian Badia, deputy chief of the Allied Command Transformation and a former German Air Force officer, shared his insights in an interview with the Suddeutsche Zeitung published on Tuesday.
“Russia is waging a hybrid war against the West,” Badia stated, cautioning that the situation could escalate uncontrollably at any moment. “There are too many grey areas and a resulting miscalculation is the biggest risk,” he added.
The general emphasized that the current crisis has expanded significantly and should not merely be seen as a repetition of the Cold War. “The confrontation with Russia is not just ‘Cold War 2.0.’ Here we are talking about a new world order,” he said.
Badia also noted that Moscow is receiving backing from China, North Korea, and Iran. He alleged that opponents of NATO are collaboratively advancing in hypersonic weapon development, satellite technology, and cyberspace enhancements. Although the deputy commander did not provide evidence for his claims, he pointed out that Russia has support from nations eager to “challenge Western dominance.”
This perspective aligns with assertions made by senior Russian officials, who have referred to the current global landscape as a hybrid war, particularly in the context of Western sanctions and military aid to Ukraine.
Moscow has consistently rejected claims from NATO officials that the alliance is not directly involved in the Ukraine conflict, despite its visible participation. “NATO is already waging a war against Russia, but it is a hybrid war using the hands of Ukrainians,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated in September.
