Hundreds of pro-Palestine Jewish activists have converged on Wall Street in New York to express their opposition to US support for what they describe as Israel’s “genocide” in Gaza. According to police, numerous demonstrators have been arrested.
On Monday, a contingent of protesters clad in red shirts displayed banners with messages such as “Jews say stop arming Israel” and “Gaza bombed, Wall Street Booms.” Other slogans included “Fund FEMA not genocide,” referencing the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which is currently dealing with the aftermath of two recent hurricanes in the southeastern US.
The demonstration, organized by Jewish Voices for Peace, attracted approximately 500 participants. The New York Police Department reported that 206 individuals were taken into custody after some protesters breached a security fence. Social media videos show activists engaged in a sit-down protest, with officers removing some demonstrators, and the scene reportedly lacked any significant clashes or active resistance.
Writing on X, the organization stated: “The US is not arming Israel to protect Jews. The US is arming Israel for its own profit and control of the region… [President Joe] Biden wants us to believe that his $18 billion slush fund this year for the Israeli government is for ‘Jewish safety.’ As Jews, we reject this myth with every fiber of our beings. We refuse to let our traditions, histories, and identities be used to massacre Palestinians.”
This protest follows the US’s announcement on Sunday regarding the new deployment of missile defense assets and troops to Israel. The Pentagon indicated that the reinforcements aim to protect Israel amidst “Iran’s unprecedented attacks against Israel.”
Since the onset of the Hamas-Israel conflict last October, pro-Palestinian protests—many of which have escalated into violence—have erupted across the US. Protesters have condemned what they characterize as indiscriminate attacks on civilians in Gaza. In response to Hamas’ surprise attack last October, Israel launched a ground operation in the Palestinian enclave. Recent weeks have also seen heightened tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, following the assassination of several key officials from the organization by West Jerusalem and the initiation of a ground operation in Lebanon.
