A Boeing 727, reportedly once owned by infamous drug lord Pablo Escobar, has been transformed into an Airbnb in Bristol, UK, complete with amenities like a hot tub and sauna.
The airplane's hull has been stripped of its wings and engines and features a revamped 1980s-style interior. Now named PYTCHAir, the plane has been painted in vibrant colors and is located in an industrial estate in Bristol.
Originally manufactured in 1968, the jet underwent conversion for private use in 1981 and was officially retired in 2012, as detailed by its current owner, businessman Johnny Palmer, who shared insights with the Bristol Post in a Thursday article.
“There is a bit of a roleplay cosplay thing going on there – people enjoy that experience and living that fantasy for a little while before returning to their normal lives,” Palmer noted. The grounded airliner provides its guests the “chance to live like a billionaire at 32,” as highlighted in the Airbnb listing.
While the listing does not reference Pablo Escobar, the plane’s complicated history, including former ownership in the Cayman Islands, makes tracing its past challenging, although Palmer suggests that one of its past holders could be the drug lord.
Escobar, known as the 'king of cocaine' for his significant role in the Medellin Cartel, controlled a staggering 80% of the global cocaine market at his peak. He was killed in a confrontation at his home in Colombia in 1993, though the details surrounding his death remain contested.
Palmer mentioned that restoring the aircraft was a multi-year endeavor. He worked to bring back the interior, which was originally set up in 1981.
“I did a lot of the electrical work myself, and I had a plumber and a carpenter – many people were involved in the process,” he explained.
The luxurious interior showcases walnut paneling, leather seating, and a gold-plated shower and toilet. Guests can also enjoy an outdoor shower, hot tub, and sauna.
The Airbnb charges a minimum of £250 per night, while peak nights can cost up to £850.
Palmer announced that profits generated from the venture will be reinvested into the continued restoration of the jet and to enhance the overall guest experience.
