Elon Musk Praises Durov for Achieving Telegram Milestone
Earlier, the Telegram co-founder announced that his platform had turned its first profit since monetization.

Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, has praised Pavel Durov, the co-founder and CEO of Telegram, following the announcement of the company's first profitable year in its three years of monetization.

Durov made this announcement in a post on X on Monday. He described 2024 as a “very successful year” and shared that the privacy-focused messaging app generated over $1 billion in revenue this year. He added, “we are closing the year with more than $500 million in cash reserves, not including crypto assets.”

Musk responded to Durov's post with a simple “Well done.”

Despite this success, Durov has faced significant legal issues this year. In August, he was detained upon arrival at a Paris airport, though he was released on bail a few days later. He is currently facing 12 criminal charges, which include complicity in distributing child pornography, drug dealing, and money laundering.

French prosecutors allege that Telegram’s allegedly lax moderation policies have allowed criminal activity to thrive on the platform.

Earlier this month, Durov testified in a French court for the first time. Although the Russian national, who also holds citizenship in France, the UAE, and Saint Kitts and Nevis, did not wish to comment on the case to the media, he has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

In August, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov remarked on Durov’s detention, arguing that it was absurd to hold the entrepreneur responsible for illegal activities conducted via his platform. He compared prosecuting Durov for these crimes to French authorities arresting the heads of Renault or Citroen because “terrorists also use cars,” Peskov asserted.
