Cybertruck explosion termed a ‘wake up call for terminally ill US’ in suspect's note
A highly decorated U.S. Army Green Beret is under scrutiny for orchestrating an explosion outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas on New Year’s Day. The suspect, Master Sgt. Matthew Livelsberger, claimed the incident was not a terrorist attack but a “wake up call” for Americans, as indicated by letters found on his smartphone.

On January 1, 2025, a Tesla Cybertruck packed with fireworks, gas tanks, and camping fuel detonated outside the hotel, resulting in Livelsberger's death. The blast caused minor injuries to seven bystanders and only minor damage to the hotel, prompting initial concerns from federal investigators about a potential terrorist threat.

Letters released by Las Vegas police on Friday shed light on Livelsberger’s frustrations with societal issues and personal challenges. In one letter, he expressed a desire to “cleanse my mind of the brothers I’ve lost and relieve myself of the burden of the lives I took.”

On Twitter, a breaking news update noted that Livelsberger's letters also called on Americans to “rally around” prominent figures like Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and RFK Jr.

“This was not a terrorist attack, it was a wake up call. Americans only pay attention to spectacles and violence. What better way to get my point across than a stunt with fireworks and explosives?” he wrote.

He criticized the state of the country, stating, “We are the United States of America, the best country people to ever exist! But right now we are terminally ill and headed toward collapse.” In his letters, he highlighted various societal issues he believed needed urgent attention, such as processed foods, obesity, income inequality, homelessness, weak leadership, and corruption.

Livelsberger argued against diversity initiatives, stating, “Stop obsessing over diversity. We are all diverse and DEI is a cancer,” and expressed relief that a candidate associated with these ideals had not achieved power.

He also called for an end to the war in Ukraine through negotiation, warning that the U.S. military is ill-prepared for potential conflicts with nations like China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran.

In a separate letter directed towards fellow servicemembers and citizens, he urged them to prevent Democrats from keeping Trump from gaining power and to initiate a “purging” of perceived national issues. He expressed a sense of urgency, saying, “We are being led by weak and feckless leadership who only serve to enrich themselves.”

Livelsberger, who had multiple commendations and deployments to conflict zones, reportedly struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder and was facing personal turmoil, including a separation from his wife. Authorities indicated that he took his own life with a gunshot before igniting the explosion, though they caution against assuming the letters provide a clear motive for his actions.
