The initial meeting may occur in China, although deliberations about the final venue are still in progress. Trump has expressed interest in welcoming Xi to his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, reminiscent of their previous meeting in 2017. However, Chinese officials prefer a more formal setting, either in Beijing or Washington, DC, to highlight the importance of the discussions, according to the SCMP.
Since his inauguration on January 20, Trump has increased tariffs on all Chinese imports from 10% to 20%, in addition to the existing duties on thousands of items. This move is intended to safeguard American interests and tackle concerns over trade imbalances. The steel, aluminum, and various consumer goods sectors have been significantly impacted.
In retaliation, China has enacted its own tariffs, ranging from 10% to 15%, on US agricultural products and energy commodities. The Chinese government has also criticized the approach taken by Washington, with Foreign Minister Wang Yi asserting that such policies are pushing the world back to a "law of the jungle."
In February, Trump suggested that a new trade agreement with China might be forthcoming and hinted at the possibility of Xi visiting the United States, although no specific timeline was mentioned.
The trade frictions between the US and China originated during Trump's first term. In 2018, he levied tariffs on Chinese goods, citing unfair trade practices and intellectual property theft. Beijing's subsequent retaliatory measures led to a cycle of actions that disrupted global markets and supply chains.
