On Friday, a “massive” airstrike targeted the underground headquarters of Hezbollah, as announced by the Israel Defense Forces.
Videos circulating on Lebanese media and social networks show thick black smoke billowing from the Dahiyeh area.
IDF spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari informed reporters that the Israeli military was behind the bombing, specifying that the target was the main headquarters of the Shia militia, situated beneath a civilian neighborhood. However, Hagari did not confirm or deny whether Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was present at the alleged headquarters during the attack.
The airstrike occurred shortly after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the UN General Assembly. According to the Times of Israel, Netanyahu was conducting a press conference when his military aide, Major General Roman Gofman, whispered information to him. Moments later, the prime minister abruptly concluded the briefing and exited the room. Netanyahu's office later shared a photo of him in his hotel room in New York, where he reportedly ordered the strike on the Hezbollah HQ.
Al Jazeera's correspondent in Beirut characterized the bombing as containing “unprecedented, multiple, loud and successive explosions” targeting an area populated by “hundreds of thousands of people.”
This strike followed a gathering in Dahiyeh for the funerals of three Hezbollah members who had been killed in Israeli airstrikes the day before. The IDF claimed responsibility for the death of Mohammad Hussein Srour, also known as Abu Saleh, who led Hezbollah’s drone, cruise missile, and air-defense branch. His death was later confirmed by the group on Friday morning.
According to Al-Arabiya, at least six buildings collapsed as a result of the Israeli airstrike. Meanwhile, the Iranian Tasnim News Agency has reported, citing Lebanese security sources, that Nasrallah is alive and well.
