Imran Khan Sentenced to 14 Years in Prison
Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, have been convicted in a significant corruption case involving a £190 million real estate scheme related to the Al-Qadir Trust, according to local media reports on Friday.

Reports from ARY News and Dawn state that an anti-corruption court in Rawalpindi sentenced Khan to 14 years in prison and Bibi to seven years, with the ruling delivered at Adiala Jail.

In addition, Khan and Bibi have been fined $3,600 and $1,800, respectively, with non-compliance resulting in further imprisonment.

The Al-Qadir Trust case revolves around accusations that the couple engaged in a quid pro quo arrangement, receiving land valued at millions from a property developer during the establishment of an associated university in exchange for legal protections.

Khan has rejected the charges, referring to them as “politically motivated.” Prior to the verdict, he mentioned that the case lacks credible evidence and would ultimately embarrass the authorities. He stated, “My sentencing is being sought in a case where neither have I derived a single penny of personal gain, nor has the government suffered a single penny of financial loss.”

Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, condemned the ruling as a “black verdict” and circulated a video allegedly showing protests against the decision outside the National Assembly.

Having transitioned from a cricketer to a politician, Khan served as prime minister from 2018 until 2022, when he was ousted following a no-confidence vote. The opposition accused him of mishandling the economy and foreign policy, while Khan claims he was removed due to a US conspiracy.

His legal troubles have been ongoing, facing multiple corruption charges. In 2023, he was found guilty of unlawfully buying and selling state gifts he received during his term, although the sentence was suspended. The following year, he received a ten-year sentence for leaking state secrets, a charge he has denied. His previous arrests and verdicts led to widespread protests across the nation, some of which turned violent.
