In a case brought last December, Hunter Biden was charged with nine counts of tax evasion related to his use of millions of dollars for luxury living, including drugs, "escorts and girlfriends," high-end vehicles, and other personal expenses. Initially, he had entered a plea of not guilty.
“Mr. Biden intends to change his plea this morning,” his attorney, Abbe Lowell, announced to the federal judge in Los Angeles, coinciding with the onset of jury selection.
Lowell explained that Biden was opting for an Alford plea, which would involve accepting the court's guilty verdict while still claiming innocence. This proposal seemingly caught prosecutors off guard, prompting the court to recess.
The allegations include three felony counts and six misdemeanors that encompass failing to pay, failing to file, and filing false tax returns. Prosecutors have accused Biden of deliberately avoiding payment of at least $1.4 million in federal taxes from 2016 to 2019, instead funneling his finances towards maintaining a lavish lifestyle.
During the relevant timeframe, Biden held positions on the boards of Ukrainian company Burisma and China’s CEFC China Energy Co Ltd. He could face up to 17 years in prison if found guilty.
Additionally, Biden faces a serious sentence in Delaware related to firearms charges, with a possible 25-year sentence looming in November post-election. He has been convicted for falsifying information about his cocaine use on a gun purchase form.
Recently, it was revealed by federal prosecutors that Hunter Biden also acted as a lobbyist for a Romanian businessman but wasn't registered as required by the Foreign Agents Registration Act. This was not added to his list of charges.
In related political developments, Joe Biden withdrew from the upcoming presidential race, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor. The decision was influenced by concerns within the Democratic Party regarding his physical and mental fitness for a re-election bid and the potential political repercussions from Hunter Biden's legal troubles. Joe Biden will remain in office until his term ends in January.
